Gift Box Basic Materials

Assemble the basic items — a wide and quite roughly bristled brush for painting; a piece of sturdy card, ribbon, string or elastic tape; a sharp knife or blade; a metal ruler for measuring and to cut against.

When all the sides are folded in and around the gift, secure them by placing a length of elastic tape, sewn together at the ends, from one side to the other. Repeat this with an identical piece of tape on the other sides.

This simple box requires no adhesive tape or staples; it is a simple and attractive way of wrapping a gift, and the dimensions can be altered to suit any size of gift. The fold- over box is ideal for gifts of clothes, whether you are giving a silk scarf (to fit the dimensions given here) or a jumper for which a larger box is needed.

It is easy to create stylish and innovative packaging by applying paint effects and decorations to plain card. In the photograph here, plain grey paper has been used as a base for a deep turquoise water colour wash. To achieve the same effect, apply paint roughly so that areas of grey show through the turquoise paint, to create a textural effect.

On the wrong side of the paper, draw in the lines where the paper will be folded. Using scissors, cut the corner and centre sections then deeply score the paper along the fold lines, being careful not to cut right through the paper.

Wrap your gift in tissue paper and lay it in the centre of what will be the base of the box. Pass a length of ribbon underneath from top to bottom, and another length from left to right.

Fold the sides of the box up around the gift, and fold the side flaps of the lid area inwards. Fold over and place the lid sides over the base sides. Carefully draw up the ribbons and tie neatly, but not so tightly that the box puckers.

Sealing the Wrapping Gift Box

The finished parcel may carry a hand-written note which can be held securely in place and decorated with a small blob of sealing wax in a contrasting colour.
