The Canvas
The canvas does not have to be marked out; instead, just follow the colour chart opposite. Remember that each square represents one intersection of canvas thread and not the hole between the thread. Each square represents one tent stitch (see diagram below). Before beginning to stitch, it is advisable to mark the top of the canvas, so that if you turn the canvas while stitching you will know where the top is. Please note that the colours on the chart are stronger than the wools themselves, to make them easier to see. The corresponding wool colours are on the colour key.
How to Stitch
Work the sampler in tent stitch (see below) using two strands of wool. Cut the canvas to size and bind the edges. Begin in any area you wish, although it may be easier to start at the top right-hand corner and work in blocks of colour. Leave the background to last.
To Personalize
Before working the background, and using the colour photograph as a guide, personalize your design with your own initials and the year in which you made it, tracking them through onto your canvas with an HB pencil or permanent marker so that they are easily visible when stitching.
Making up
Stretching: When you have finished your design, the needlepoint must be ’square’ before framing. If out-of-square, the tapestry should be lightly dampened or sprayed and left for a few minutes so that the canvas softens. Gently pull square and then pin out, right side down, into blotting paper on a flat, clean board. Use tacks, staples or drawing pins and pin outside the sewn surface. Do not strain too tightly or the tapestry will dry with a scalloped edge. When thoroughly dry, remove from the board. The drying process may take 2-3 days and sometimes it is necessary to repeat the process.
Framing: You may prefer to take your tapestry to a professional framer who will be able to stretch the canvas for you as well as frame the finished tapestry.
A little daily Embroidery had been a constant element in Mrs Transome’s life; that smoothing occupation of taking stitches to produce what neither she nor anyone else wanted was then the resources of many a well born and unhappy woman.
