Padded Coathanger

MATERIALS

Wooden coathanger
Strips of thin foam sheeting

Narrow ribbon to cover the hook of the
hanger

A length of satin or other luxury fabric
for hanger covering, approximately
15cm (6in) wide and three times the
length of the hanger

Trimmings of lace and satin bows

Wrap strips of foam around the hanger to a depth of approximately 5cm (2in) and secure it by tying cotton thread around the hanger. To cover the hook of the coathanger, neatly wrap narrow ribbon around it. Secure by stitching the bottom of the ribbon to the foam padding on the hanger, and occasionally by sewing on the hook itself. Fold the fabric covering in half lengthways and cut a small hole in the middle of the folded top edge. Place the fabric over the hanger and stitch along the open bottom edge so that it is neat and fits closely to the edge of the padding. From each end, gather the fabric into small pleats so that it is the same size as the hanger. Stabilize the material by occasionally sewing the pleats in place to the foam backing. Fold over the open ends of the material or sew together neatly. Add lace, bows and other trimmings.

To make Heart-Shaped Scented Sachets

Using fabric such as satin or cloth sacking, cut out two heart-shaped pieces for each sachet. Embroider one of the pieces of fabric with the initials of the bride and groom, then add any other design or motif you think appropriate. Place fabric right sides together and sew up, leaving a small gap. Turn right sides out and fill with dried rose petals, lavender or camomile flowers. Sew on lengths of ribbon to the top of each sachet and tie to the hook of the hanger.

Initial Cushion

Two pieces of luxury fabric such as satin,
approximately 15cm (10in) square

Optional calico backing, same size as the
pieces above (only necessary if the outer
fabric is fine)

Length of fabric for frill, approximately
10cm (4in) wide and 90cm (36in) long,
hemmed along one edge

Embroidery threads for initials and
motifs on cover

Embroider initials or flowers on right side of fabric that will form the top cover.

Gather and tack the frill on to the right side of the bottom cover. Tack the frill fabric in place with the turned edge placed against the cushion and the unfinished edge on the outside, allowing the unsewn side to overlap the edge of the cushion by approximately 1.5cm (¹/2in).

Place the two right sides of the cushion together, with the frill sandwiched between them. Sew through the three layers, leaving an opening of approximately 10cm (4in). Turn right sides out, fill with a soft fibre filling and sew up the opening.
