As a time of both rebirth and renewal, Easter is connected with folklore related to planting. In Northern Ireland, there is a belief that if you plant potatoes on Saint Patrick’s Day (17 March), you will have the first crop by the time the Orangemen march to celebrate the Battle of the Boyne (12 July).

In the past, Easter was the only time during the year that household fires were allowed to burn out. The hearth symbolized the heart of the home, and if the fire went out it meant bad luck, possibly death. In large houses and stately homes, Easter signalled a time of frenzied activity, as all the fires and stoves were put out and the chimneys and fireplaces cleaned. Spring is also the traditional season for baptizing babies and this is likely to have contributed to the belief that it was lucky to wear at least one item of new clothing for the first time at Easter.

1 May, also known as May Day, once marked the start of the Celtic new year, and still heralds the end of spring. May Day was originally celebrated as part of the Roman festival of Flora, held for the goddess of flowers and fruit. Dancing around the May Pole derives from these ancient fertility-cult dances and the name of the month comes from Maia, goddess of fertility and growth. Flowers at this time of year are still used in the day’s festivities, to make garlands and wreaths.
