A dog is for life, not just for Christmas
Posted by dodoNever buy a puppy for the children at Christmas. It’s the worst possible time to introduce a small creature into a new home with all the noise and excitement and tension. The children can easily get fed up with a puppy, too, when it starts eating their toys or making puddles, and little children, unless constantly watched, can be very cruel to animals if unused to them.
Tragically, Christmas is also a time when people go away, and, unable to be bothered to put their dogs in kennels, turn them out in the street, dump them in the country or, even worse, put them out on motorways. The majority of these poor animals end up in dog’s homes and are put down; but sometimes there is a happy ending.
On Christmas Eve at the Evesham kennels of the National Canine Defence League two abandoned dogs were brought in: one, a beautiful young sheepdog bitch, the other a blind old mongrel, thin as a rake, with torn paws from desperate running. The kennel maids called them Mary and Joseph. After Christmas a home was soon found for beautiful Mary, but no one wanted poor blind Joseph; until some weeks later a newly married couple, actually called Mary and Joseph, came in looking for a puppy, but, moved by poor old Joseph’s plight, took him home. A month later they asked if they could bring him back for a visit. The kennel maids were amazed to see Joseph jumping out of the car, and bouncing joyfully up to them. In a happy home he had regained his sight. All he needed was love.
