Aquarium Candel DIY

Posted by dodo

aquarium

This little aquarium is full of life! There are fish swimming from side to side and activity all around. The key to the Aquarium candle is that various nonflammable embedments are situated at different heights throughout the container. There are many ways to accomplish this, but this project demonstrates the simplest technique — fast- setting clear epoxy glue. Read the rest of this entry »

Sand Art Candle Project

Posted by dodo

sand-art

Sand is a popular additive to gel candles. It is often used to create the bottom of a seascape or to hide a wick tab from view. However, you’ll use sand in this project for a different reason. You may find a container that you’d really like to use for a candle project, but the shape doesn’t lend itself to sustaining a flame. Read the rest of this entry »

Where are you going to spend Christmas this year?

Posted by dodo

`There was a point this Christmas,’ said a girlfriend, ‘as I was struggling to get the turkey out of the oven, and my husband was sweating away over the roast potatoes, when I asked myself for the hundredth time whether it was all worth it. The eager little faces all round the table — knife and fork at the ready in each tight little fist — were not those of the children but of the collection of geriatric grandparents, great aunts and uncles we seem to feed each year.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Survival Christmas, Christmas presents, Spending on gifts for Christmas part 4

Posted by dodo

Bestsellers are also hazardous presents. Many years ago my brother and I each gave the other a copy of Doctor Zhivago. Be careful, too, if you’re going to read the book before giving it, not to turn down the pages or drop it in the bath, and remember that if you do cut off the price, because it’s considered bad form not to do so, the recipient can’t then change it. Survival Christmas, Christmas presents, Spending on gifts for Christmas part 3

Posted by dodo

Men, who probably long to be given Samantha Fox in a grass skirt and a lawn mower, tend to get black silk pyjamas as the ultimate in sophistication. Invariably they also get something to do with drink: bottle-openers, glasses, wine-coolers. Noel would prefer a wife-cooler over Christmas. A friend says that one of her uncles got fourteen bottles of various kinds of booze one year, and nothing else. He was terribly upset because, he said, anyone would think he was an alcoholic — which in fact he was. Read the rest of this entry »

When do you open your Presents?

Posted by dodo

Lovers open their presents together before Christmas; the neglected open theirs when they arrive in the New Year. The Germans open theirs around six o’clock on Christmas Eve. The Royal Family, being largely of German ancestry and because they spend most of Christmas Day going to church, also open theirs on Christmas Eve. An eighty-foot-long trestle table in the Red Drawing-room is used to pile up the presents which are handed out by Prince Philip. Read the rest of this entry »

Swelling the Christmas Card Post, I’ve been to a Marvelous Party continue…

Posted by dodo

Despite Noël’s claim that even numbers don’t matter, Scarlett is fretting about the shortage of spare men. Some girl rings up to cancel.

`Oh goodee, I mean oh gosh, how sad,’ says Scarlett, ‘We MUST get together in the New Year.’

Zero hour. The house is radiant with candles; the carpets stretch out, virginal. Fortunately, between parties, memory blots out the sheer terror that always grips her before everyone arrives, when all Scarlett craves is a quadruple vodka laced with Valium which would lay her out for ever. Outside, Robin and his mates, already blue with cold, wait stamping their feet, to help park the cars. Read the rest of this entry »

Knitted Gift Guernsey Jumpers, Country Living

Posted by dodo

Knitted garments from the Channel Island of Guernsey, situated between the south coast of England and the north of France, have been popular gifts since the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The fine quality stockings knitted on the island at that time were often given to the royalty.

The style of tubular knitting which was used to make a Guernsey jumper was developed from the traditional method of knitting stockings Read the rest of this entry »
