Paper-mache DIY: Making Tenpins

Posted by dodo

These little, lightweight tenpins are simple to make, and the whole family can enjoy the game. The bodies and heads are fun to decorate, and you can paint them in the brightest colors you can find. You can make small pins using toilet paper tubes, or if you want them a little taller, paper towel tubes are ideal.

Tape, PVA glue

Poster paint and paintbrush or felt-tip pens

Newspaper or tissue paper Plain white paper

Cut ten pieces of colored paper 1/2 in (1cm)

1 longer and wider than the tubes.

2Roll the paper around each tube so that it overlaps the tube equally at both ends. Glue the long edge down.

3Snip the ends of the paper to make a fringe at each end of the tube.

4 Dab glue on the fringe. Tuck it down inside the tube.

5Decorate each tube differently, using paints or felt-tip pens.

Making the Pin’s Head

1 Crumple some newspaper or tissue paper into a ball that is large enough to fit on top of a tube (about 2 in (5cm) across).

2Cut an 8 in (20cm) square of plain paper and put the ball in the middle.

3 Wrap the ball with the paper to make a head and neck. Spread some glue inside the neck.

4 Tightly twist the neck and hold it for a minute while the glue dries.

5 Paint a face and some hair on the head.

6 Spread some glue on the inside of the top of a tube and push the head firmly into position. Make ten heads — one for each pin — and give each one a different expression.

Making the Tenpins Ball

Crumble some newspaper into a ball and tape all around it

Use this ball to knock down the pins.

How to play

For 2-6 players

Arrange the pins in four rows, in the shape of a triangle. Decide on a starting line about 2 yards (2 meters) away from the pins. Take turns to roll the ball three times at the tenpins.

How to score

Score a point for every pin you knock down. If you knock all the pins down with one ball, score 20 points. The player with the most points after 10 turns is the winner.
