Sewing a Fragrance Cosmetic Gift Basket, perfect Wedding Favor
Posted by dodoMaterials
A small open-top wicker or raffia basket
A small pot of emulsion paint in the
colour of your choice
Fabric to line inside of the basket
Fabric to create the upper covering (plus
an equal amount of material for the
lining— approximately one and three
quarter times the circumference of the
basket)
A double length of cord or ribbon to
gather closed the basket top
A narrow strip of fabric, same length as
top covering and wide enough to take
double thickness of cord
Paint the outside of the basket in a colour of your choice and allow to dry.
Base Lining
Cut a circle of the lining fabric to fit generously into the base of the basket, and a similar piece with which to line the sides. Sew the bottom of the side lining to the edge of the circular base and fit neatly inside the basket.
Sew the top edge of the lining fabric to the upper rim of the basket to keep it in place, and add a few stitches through the base to anchor it.
To make the Basket Top
Take the narrow length of fabric that will cover the tying-cord and sew the two long sides together to form a tube.
Place together the right sides of the lining and decorative fabric for the upper covering, and sew all the way around, leaving a small opening. Turn the fabric inside out and sew up the opening. Add lace or other trimming to the top edge of the material.
Sew the narrow tube of fabric through which the tying cord will run, to the right side of the upper covering. Cut and oversew two openings through which the cord can be pulled.
Carefully tack the bottom edge of the upper covering in position on the upper rim of the basket, gathering and pleating as you go so that the fabric fits snugly to the basket. Sew in place and join the remaining open sides together.
Thread the cord through the tube opening twice and knot or sew the two ends together securely. Pull alternate loops through opposite holes so that the fabric gathers close. Pull opposite cords to open the basket.
Fill the basket with small gifts for the bride, such as a bottle of eau de cologne or lavender water, an embroidered pin cushion or a handkerchief and a sachet of bath herbs.
A Bride’s Trousseau
A bride-to-be’s wedding trousseau, known in France as a dot, normally consisted of clothes and linen to be taken to her new home. Gifts commonly associated with a trousseau may include elaborate coathangers or delicately embroidered cushions. Here a plain basket has been transformed into a stylish dressing-table accessory for a bride. Filled with favourite soaps or bath oils, a bridal basket makes a special, personal gift.
